Parquet floor treatment

Parquet floor treatment

Treating a parquet floor properly not only makes it look beautiful – it also protects it from wear, dirt and drying out. One of the most durable and timeless methods is to use linseed oil wax, a traditional natural product that gives the floor a water-repellent, satin-matt and diffusion-open surface while highlighting the character of the wood.

What is linseed oil wax?

Linseed oil wax is a combination of boiled linseed oil and beeswax that have been boiled together to form a homogeneous product for surface treatment of wood. The wax provides a thin, walkable protection that penetrates the pores of the wood and protects against moisture and wear. Since the linseed oil wax hardens together with the linseed oil, the floor gets a durable and natural surface that is easy to maintain.

Preparations for parquet floor treatment

Proper preparation is crucial for a good result:

  1. Cleaning: The floor must be clean of dust, dirt and grease.
  2. Sanding: Remove all previous surface treatment (varnish, film or old oil/wax) so that the wood is clean and absorbent.
  3. Vacuuming: After sanding – vacuum and wipe the floor thoroughly.
  4. Wood moisture content: Make sure the wood is dry before treatment.

Step-by-step: Treatment with linseed oil wax

1. Apply the wax

  • Use a rough scouring pad to work a thin layer of linseed oil wax into the wood.

  • Work in the lengthwise direction of the wood for best penetration.

  • Let the wax soak in for about 60 minutes – depending on the absorbency of the wood.

2. Wipe off excess

  • Once the wax has absorbed, wipe off any excess with a soft cloth (e.g. terry towel).

  • Excess left on the surface can cause it to feel sticky and fail to cure properly.

3. Let dry and cure

  • The surface is often walkable after about 24 hours, but full curing takes up to 1–2 weeks depending on temperature and ventilation.

  • Avoid placing carpets or heavy furniture during the curing time.

4. More layers

  • One coat is usually sufficient for a well-prepared floor.

  • In the case of extremely dry wood or uneven absorption, an extra thin coat can be applied after the first coat has hardened.

Maintenance of treated parquet floors

For long-lasting protection, regular maintenance with linseed oil soap is recommended – a classic, gentler way to clean and maintain linseed oil waxed floors:

  • For daily cleaning: Use lukewarm water and linseed oil soap – the soap leaves a thin layer of grease that protects the wood from drying out.
  • Use a well-wrung mop or cloth – the floor should never become soaked.
  • Adjust the amount of soap according to the type of wood and wear: too much soap can break down the linseed oil wax, the surface will become duller and the lifespan will be shorter.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Applying too thick a layer of wax – leads to a sticky surface and uneven curing.
  • Treatment on floors with remaining varnish or film – the wax cannot penetrate.
  • Damp or dusty substrate – negatively affects penetration and finish.

Benefits of parquet floor treatment with linseed oil wax

  • Natural and durable surface – no plastic film or synthetic additives.
  • Diffusion-permeable – the wood can breathe, reducing the risk of cracks and drying out.
  • Water-repellent – protects against everyday spills.
  • Repairable – easy to spot repair if necessary.
  • Beautiful, satin finish – highlights the grain and tone of the wood.

Frequently asked questions about parquet floor treatment

Can you use regular linseed oil on parquet floors?

No – linseed oil itself is not suitable for the wear and tear that wooden floors are exposed to. For parquet, linseed oil wax or floor oil/wax mixtures are used instead to achieve a durable protective surface.

How often does the floor need to be treated?

It depends on wear and use. Regular maintenance with linseed oil soap extends the time between treatments with linseed oil wax.

Can I walk on the floor right away?

The surface is often walkable after about 24 hours, but avoid liquids and carpets until the curing is complete.
